Maturity is learning to endure the pain of deferred gratification, as when reality requires it; thus, proposing that “an ego thus educated has become ‘reasonable’; acting no longer to let itself be governed by merely the principle of pleasure, but obeys the principle of reality, which also, basically, seeks to obtain pleasure, but that pleasure which is assured through taking account of reality.
